Azathioprine
Imuran |
Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant, which decreases the body’s natural immunity. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), in patients who are unresponsive to other treatments. |
Budesonide
Entocort |
Busdesonide (Entocort) is used for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn’s disease (CD). The enema preparation of budesonide is used to treat UC located in the rectum and lower part of the colon. The capsule preparation is used to treat CD located at the end of the small intestine and beginning of the colon. |
Ciprofloxacin
Cipro |
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria. In the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it works by altering the bacteria in the intestines, which can help to decrease inflammation. |
Infliximab
Remicade |
Infliximab is used to treat moderate to severe Crohn’s disease and Crohn’s disease with fistulas if the patient has had an inadequate response to corticosteroids or immunosuppressants. |
5-ASA / Mesalamine
Asacol, Pentasa, Mesasal, Salofalk,
5-aminosalacylic acid |
This medication is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. It works by reducing bowel inflammation and other symptoms of the disease. |
Methotrexate
Rheumatrex, amethopterin |
Methotrexate can be used in the treatment of some severe cases of Crohn’s disease, in order to improve symptoms and decrease the dose of prednisone required. |
Metronidazole
Flagyl |
Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria. In the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it works by altering the bacteria in the intestines, which can help to decrease inflammation. |
Prednisone

Prednisone is a corticosteroid, similar to a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Prednisone relieves inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. |
Sulfasalazine
Salazopyrin, Salazopyrin En-tabs,
5-Aminosalacylic acid (5-ASA) |
This medication is used to decrease bowel inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. |
