JoAnne Arcand
JoAnne is the clinical dietitian for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She is also working towards the completion of a Masters degree at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on the nutritional management of heart failure. Previously, JoAnne acted as a project coordinator for the Department of Nutrition & Food Services. She graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario. JoAnne is also a graduate of the Comprehensive Dietetic Internship Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. She joined the team of dietitians at MSH in 2001.

Ruth Carswell
Ruth completed her BASc at the University of Guelph and internship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She has worked at Mount Sinai Hospital for the past 18 years, initially as a clinical dietitian and for the past number of years as the Manager of Clinical Nutrition. Ruth's administrative role also includes the management of the CBORD Diet Office Computer System. Ruth has served on the board of our professional dietetic association and is involved in numerous committees. Karin McGibbon Award recipient in 2001.

Marlene Choleva
Marlene graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Food and Nutrition) from Ryerson University and completed her dietetic Internship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. She has been an inpatient dietitian at Mount Sinai Hospital for the past 14 years. Currently she specializes in General Medicine, Cardiology, Geriatrics, and Psychiatry. Marlene sits on various committees within the hospital including the General Specialty Medicine and Cardiology groups. She is also a member of the Wound Care education team, and is a speaker for The Sinai Scene Wound Management Lecture. Most recently, Marlene has participated in research studies involving cardiology patients with heart failure.

Erin Collins
Erin graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, and completed a clinical nutrition internship at The Hospital for Sick Children. After focusing on pediatric and neonatal nutrition for two years, Erin joined the obstetrical/gynecology team in 2000, and specializes in nutrition for women. She is responsible for both inpatients and ambulatory clinics, the majority of her practice being focused on the obstetrical population. Erin dedicates much of her clinical time to the maternal phenylketonuria (MPKU) population, where she takes on a leadership role by managing patients throughout the greater Toronto region. Erin has recently submitted a study for publication entitled "Factors Influencing Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration in High-risk Pregnancies and NICU Infants", and is currently examining the Toronto MPKU pregnancies over the past 19 years. In addition, she is involved with many committees for the Women's and Infants' Health Program, and is Co-chair of the Domestic Violence Awareness Committee for Mount Sinai Hospital. Karin McGibbon Award Recipient 2002.
Irving Dillon
Irving Dillon is a Supervisor / Diet Technician. Irving has worked at Mount Sinai since may 1985.

Christie Hamilton
Christie is a graduate of The University of Guelph and currently a clinical dietitian for Leadership Sinai's Centre for Diabetes. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator and provides nutritional counseling for clients with all types of diabetes. She is a co-investigator of the study entitled 'Evaluation of a stage based approach to self-management education for Intensive Therapy'. Christie co-authored 'Building Competency in Diabetes Education: the Essentials' and "Building Competency in Diabetes Education: Advancing Practice".

Nadya Harris
Nadya Harris is the most recent addition to the Nutrition Team at Mount Sinai Hospital. Her position as clinical diet technician allows her to interact closely with the obstetric, psychiatric, geriatric, general medicine and cardiology populations. In 1994, Nadya graduated from the Food and Nutrition Management program at Centennial College in Toronto. Her work experience has enabled her to develop a strong background in nutrition management and information systems operation (CBORD). In the past she has worked as a Nutrition Supervisor in other Toronto area hospitals including Markham Stouffville Hospital and University Health Network.

Wolfgang Holzschuhrer
Wolfgang is the Executive Chef at Mount Sinai Hospital. He coordinates and oversees all aspects of food production for patient and retail food services within the Department of Nutrition and Food Services. Prior to employment at Mount Sinai Hospital, Wolfgang was the executive chef in many hotels and country clubs in Germany, Switzerland, Barbados, Bahamas, and Bermuda. During his years of practice, he has won several awards and established the first Master Chef program in Bermuda.

Kirsten Kotsopoulos
Kirsten graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She completed a pediatric clinical nutrition internship at the Hospital of Sick Children in Toronto. Kirsten specializes in pediatric and neonatal nutrition support and has been working at Mount Sinai Hospital in the Neonatology Program since 1999. She is also involved in many committees within both the Neonatology and Women's and Infants' Health Programs. Currently, Kirsten is a Co-investigator of a research study in the NICU assessing growth parameters of infants less than 28 weeks. She has also been a co-investigator of a study investigating the breastfeeding rates of mothers of high-risk infants.

Joy Langlois
Joy has been the Director of the Nutrition and Food Services Department since 1986. Joy has a keen entrepreneurial spirit and in this leadership role has initiated many successful opportunities for clinical nutrition, education and training and systems/ business development. The commercial services within the portfolio of Nutrition and Food Services are highly recognized as among the most successful businesses in non-traditional venues in Canada. Joy has been involved in many strategic programme/change initiatives and currently CO-Chairs the hospital's Joint Health and Safety Committee. She was also the recipient of a Karin McGibbon Award of Excellence in 1999. Joy graduated with a degree in Applied Science from the University of Guelph and completed her dietetic internship with the Ottawa Regional Internship Programme. In 1999 she completed the Executive Development Programme at the Schulich School of Business York University.
Nita Medeiros
Nita is a Food Service Supervisor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Services. In recent years she has developed a strong leadership role in the patient food service area department. Nita has proven herself to be an outstanding leader and was awarded a Karen McGibbon Award of Excellence for her excellent contribution to Mount Sinai Hospital. She has also earned a certificate in Business Management from Seneca College. Nita has been employed at Mount Sinai Hospital since 1976.

Sarah Ocquaye
Sarah graduated with a diploma in Hotel & Restaurant Management from Loyalist College, and is a certified Food Service Supervisor. During her 25 years in the hospitality industry, Sarah has had the opportunity to work in several establishments including Banff Springs Hotel, Hotel Lake Louise, and the Westin Harbor Castle. Sarah has been at Mount Sinai Hospital since 1991, and has expertise in managing several areas of our retail operation including Catering, Cafeteria and Second Cup. Under Sarah 's leadership, our michel's baguette has won Guest Excellence Award for two consecutive years.
Allyson Perruzza
Allyson Perruzza is the Supervisor for the Cafeteria.
Valerie Poullos
Valerie Poullos is the clinical dietitian in the inpatient areas of Surgical Oncology and General Surgery. Her main focus is in nutrition support (enteral and parenteral) and in post-surgical diet education. Valerie has been at Mount Sinai Hospital since 1990 and worked in various areas of the hospital in the earlier stages of her career. She is a member of the GI Oncology Team, the ENT Team and the TPN Team at MSH. In September 2002, Valerie was a speaker at the Healthy Living Lecture Series entitled "A Discussion on Colon Cancer". Prior to working at MSH, Valerie completed an undergraduate applied science degree focusing on Applied Human Nutrition at the University of Guelph and a clinical dietetic internship at
Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital.

Nuryt Raif
Nuryt recently graduated with distinction from Ryerson University, School of Food and Nutrition. Upon completion of a dietetic internship at Mount Sinai Hospital she joined the Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes team at MSH. Nuryt works with both the clinical and research teams. She is the nutrition resource for the Pregnancy and Diabetes Program and focuses particularly on the Gestational Diabetes Program. She also participates in the participant recruiting procedures for various research studies, as well as being a contributing writer to the quarterly newsletters distributed to study patients. Uniquely, Nuryt was recently involved in the implementation of a research study across Canada evaluating other dietitians' attitudes towards issues of overweight and obesity management, an area of practice of significant interest to her.

Melina Ramiro
Melina has a three-year degree in Foods and Nutrition from Ryerson University. She has also completed a two-year diploma in Food and Nutrition Management at Centennial College in Toronto. Melina has been employed as a diet technician at MSH since her graduation. Since 1982, she has played significant supportive roles in both clinical nutrition and patient services. Until recently, Melina's primary focus was collaboration with registered dietitians to provide care for the obstetric, psychiatric, geriatric, general medicine and cardiology populations. Currently, Melina is fulfilling a leadership role in the patient food services sector of the Department.

Rob Relae
Rob Reale is a Supervisor for Five Star Catering & Event Planning. In recent years he has developed a strong backbone in the hospitality business by obtaining a Business Management certificate from Seneca College and through his participation at catering conventions in Texas, Calgary, and Las Vegas. In the past, Rob has been involved in many other areas of the Department of Nutrition and Food Services including Second Cup, michel's baguette, and Cafeteria. Rob is a true team player and is well known for his ability to make people smile. He was awarded a Karen McGibbon Award of Excellence in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Julie Robers
Julie is the inpatient clinical dietitian for the Gastrointestinal (GI) Program at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Her work in the GI area primarily involves the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) medical and surgical populations. Julie specializes in parenteral and enteral nutrition support as well as peri-operative therapeutic diet education. She regularly provides inservice education to staff and students from all disciplines. She has spoken at support groups and lecture series for the public; and has appeared on television twice. Clinical research endeavours include supervision of dietetic intern research studies and participation in national critical care survey and intervention studies. Julie graduated from McMaster University with an Honours BSc in Biology and later completed an Honours BASc in Applied Human Nutrition from the University of Guelph. She completed her comprehensive nutrition internship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Julie joined the Nutrition Department at Mt. Sinai in 1999.

Vanna Roopchand
Vanna graduated from the University of Guelph with and Honors Bachelor of Commerce degree. After working at MSH as a Food Service Supervisor, she then went on to complete an administrative dietetic internship at Misercordia Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. In her current position she is responsible for the management of information systems, procurement, and inventory. She is the Chair of the CBORD User Group in Ontario. She is also an active member of the HeatlhPro Committee. Vanna has been an active member of the United Way committee for the past 10 years.

Ronnie Tupas
Ronnie is the Supervisor for Second Cup, a franchise that he has managed since 2001. Ronnie, however, has been with the Department of Nutrition and Food Services since 1986. In this time he has worked in many areas of the Department. Recently he has received a certificate in Business Management from Seneca College. Under Ronnie's leadership, the Second Cup has won several national Second Cup awards including Best European Award in 2002, Best Food Merchandiser Award in 2003, and the Ultimate All-stars Award in 2002 and 2003.
