Day Surgery (Elective Outpatient Surgery)

If you are scheduled for Day Surgery, you should expect to go home on the same day as you have your operation, in the early to late afternoon or evening.

Please review the following prior to your procedure:

You must have someone take you home after your operation. It is your responsibility to make this arrangement before the day of your operation.
Please remember that it is safe for you to go home and most people actually prefer to rest in their own homes. Many people feel tired and unwell after an anesthetic and operation. However, you will quickly recover.
Pain is usually well controlled by taking an over-the-counter pain medication available at the Mount Sinai Hospital Drug Store in the main lobby. Your surgeon may give a prescription for a stronger pain medication, if you need it.
Remember to drink plenty of water and fluids every hour.
You may vomit or feel sick to your stomach, especially after the car ride home. This often passes within one hour. If the sick feeling or vomiting lasts longer than one hour, you may take an over-the-counter anti-nausea medication. Drinking plenty of water may also help your nausea.
You can return to your normal activity and diet as soon as you feel up to it. The nurses and your surgeon will tell you if your situation is different.
Depending on what type of operation you are having, you may find it difficult to get into your car for the trip home. Try sitting down on the seat facing the door, then swing one leg in the car at a time. Often a steady hand from the person taking you home is helpful.
When you return home you need to rest. Organize a few meals and do laundry and heavier household chores prior to coming to the hospital. This way you can relax for a few days and get the rest you need.
